Climate Action Summit 2019 – Morning Session

United Nations

Climate change is the defining issue of our time and now is the defining moment to do something about it. There is still time to tackle climate change, but it will require an unprecedented effort from all sectors of society. To boost ambition and accelerate actions to implement the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, UN Secretary-General António Guterres is asking leaders, from government, business and civil society, to come to the 2019 Climate Action Summit on 23 September with plans to address the global climate emergency. The Summit will spark the transformation that is urgently needed and propel action that will benefit everyone.

Ep. 65 – You Stupid N***ers: How We Must Approach Racism in 2019 and Beyond

The Breakdown with Shaun King

Of course we were all outraged when we saw the video of Nancy Goodman walking right up to two young black customers and calling them “stupid n—.” We don’t need to break down how problematic this incident is. Instead, Shaun is going to break down how important it is to be mindful of how we react to moments of blatant racism like this. Racism has victims. It is violent and it spreads. And our reaction to it matters.

How Online Disinformation Affects the Real World

CYBER

In the lead up to the 2016 US presidential elections, the Russian government allegedly used internet trolls, fake Facebook accounts, and hackers in a coordinated disinformation campaign. What did we learn from it? And how is the world preparing to deal with this new kind of information operations that straddle between the online and real world? We spoke to Roel Schouwenberg, the director of intelligence and research at Celsus Advisory Group, a consulting firm based in the US that helps clients deal with disinformation operations.

The Tech Worker Resistance

IRL – Online Life Is Real Life

There’s a movement building within tech. Workers are demanding higher standards from their companies — and because of their unique skills and talent, they have the leverage to get attention. Walkouts and sit-ins. Picket protests and petitions. Shareholder resolutions, and open letters. These are the new tools of tech workers, increasingly emboldened to speak out. And, as they do that, they expose the underbellies of their companies’ ethics and values or perceived lack of them.

How Trump took over America’s courts

Vox

President Donald Trump is building his longest-lasting legacy in a place that’s often overlooked: the federal courts. It’s not just the Supreme Court that’s important — it hears less than 100 cases a year — his impact is being seen in places like the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

This court has stopped many of Trump’s most controversial executive orders: the travel ban, emergency funding for a border wall. But this historically liberal court won’t look very liberal at the end of Trump’s first term.

D.i.Re/Change.org

AntiCorpi/The Vision

Medici Senza Frontiere/Facebook

EU Copyright Reform 2019 – Why Upload Filters Are a Bad Idea

epicenter.works

The open Internet we all know and love, where everyone can participate, will soon no longer exist. EU politicians are about to pass a law which they say is supposed to combat unauthorized copies. In pursuit of that goal, they’re about to make a fundamental change that would affect all of us.
It all comes down to the main question: Who is liable for files illegally uploaded on the Internet?

The European Copyright Directive: What Is It, and Why Has It Drawn More Controversy Than Any Other Directive In EU History?

Cory Doctorow – Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)

During the week of March 25, the European Parliament will hold the final vote on the Copyright Directive, the first update to EU copyright rules since 2001; normally this would be a technical affair watched only by a handful of copyright wonks and industry figures, but the Directive has become the most controversial issue in EU history, literally, with the petition opposing it attracting more signatures than any other petition in change.org’s history.

What It’s Like to Live Through Cape Town’s Massive Water Crisis

Aryn Baker – TIME

I knew we were in trouble when I found myself Googling dry composting toilets. That was on Feb. 1, just after the mayor’s office here in Cape Town announced new water restrictions. We are now limited to using 13 gallons of water per person per day. That’s enough for a 90-second shower, a half-gallon of drinking water, a sinkful to hand-wash dishes or laundry, one cooked meal, two hand washings, two teeth brushings and one toilet flush. I figured I could save an extra couple of gallons by forgoing the daily flush in favor of a dry composting toilet. Hippie friends living off the grid in the country do it. How bad could it be?

Identity Verification in a Post-Breach World

Troy Hunt – U.S. House Commettee on Energy and Commerce

Data breaches are growing in both prevalence and size. The rate at which we willingly share personal data is also growing, particularly with an increasing proportion of the population being “internet natives” who’ve not known a time where we didn’t willingly share information online. Increasingly, the assumption has to be that everything we digitise may one day end up in unauthorised hands and the way we authenticate ourselves must adapt to be resilient to this.

This could be your last chance to stop ISPs from messing up your Internet. The FCC is about to announce a vote to slash net neutrality rules, allowing ISPs like Verizon to block apps, slow websites, and charge fees to control what you see & do online. Once they announce the vote, it’s hard to stop. But if we flood them with calls now, *Congress* can stop the vote.

On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. This path, where the moon will completely cover the sun and the sun’s tenuous atmosphere – the corona – can be seen, will stretch from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun’s disk. NASA created this website to provide a guide to this amazing event. Here you will find activities, events, broadcasts, and resources from NASA and our partners across the nation.
